Shallow Soil

The second soil is shallow and rocky. Maybe the soil looks okay on the surface but there isn’t enough room beneath the surface for a plant to really take root and grow.

When you plant, each different type of plant is supposed to be planted at a different depth. If you plant tomatoes, the seed goes a couple of inches beneath the soil. If you plant a tree, you have to dig down at least eighteen inches. The rocks beneath prevent the roots from going very deep. If you plant something deep enough, it won’t last for as long as it was intended.

Plants can survive on shallow soil for some time. Trees can live for years with shallow roots. But what happens when a storm comes along? Trees with shallow roots get blown over. When a drought comes along, plants with deep roots survive because the further down in the soil you go, the more water there will be. At the top, all the water has been dried up however, and the plants with shallow roots wither up and die.

People will hear the gospel and some will accept it. It will appear that there is a plant growing and that all is going well. However, the roots are not being established. These people have heard the gospel, but they are not growing in their walk with God. They are not feeding themselves on His Word or praying on a regular basis. When trouble comes along, they have no support system. When someone questions their beliefs, they do not know what the Bible says so that they may defend themselves. When tragedy strikes, they will whither away and die.
These people may appear to be Christians and have gone through a conversion experience. However, hard times expose their faith for what it is, shallow. At the end, the plant ends up dead and the seed produces no fruit. God isn’t looking for just a plant, he expects a harvest of fruit. If a person does not produce fruit in their life, they are a worthless plant and will be treated as such.

The person whose heart is shallow is overcome by the normal struggles of a Christian and the cares of the world. They lose faith in God when they don’t understand their struggles because they are not rooted in God’s Word
