Instructing
The sermon on the
mount in is a clear example of Jesus as an instructor. The
beginning of the sermon on the mount says, “Now when he saw the
crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples
came to him, and he began to teach them…”
Instructing is more in line with what people think of when they
talk about teaching.
Instruction can be done one on one or
in a group. Although instruction can be based on practical
life application, it can also just be passing on knowledge
from one person to another.
In the great commission Jesus
instructed his disciples to teach others to obey everything
he had commanded them. A person cannot do what God has asked
them to do if they don’t know what God has asked them to do.
As a model and mentor a person can show love. Instruction
will tell a person what Jesus taught about love and why we
should love others. Then they can compare what Jesus says
about love with what Paul tells us about love. Finally, an
instructor can take the knowledge they have imparted and
work on life application. They can tell their disciple how
the passages on love should be applied in relation to their
coworker that is very hard to love.
